Cloth Diapering

For some people those two words bring them inner chaos. They make their hearts palpitate and all sorts of stress reactions result. I’m not a completely different hybrid of a human being. I’m a bit nervous about it too. I don’t know how I’m going to do it. But fortunately there are a lot of resources available online that I have been able to check out to relieve some of the stress and worry about how this all is going to play out.
Let’s just vent it out a little…
I’m worried about washing the cloth diapers, the smell of cloth diapers in a laundry bag/basket, the staining, the time it will take to wash the diapers, the stress that will result when I don’t get it right the first time, investing in something that I might not like once I try it…the list goes on.
Turns out my heart is only beating faster now so I’m going to write out positive things that I think could result from making this change…
I won’t have to buy disposables constantly or wipes once I figure out what I’m going to do for cloth wipes- and get over my fears regarding that.
I won’t have to worry about noxious chemicals constantly on my baby’s bottom.
The one time cost will save us money in the long run with future kiddos…actually sooner than that it turns out.
My negative effect on the environment will be diminished….not using non-renewable sources, not filling up a landfill with non-biodegradable matter, etc.
Feeling good about what choices I have made for my family.
Teaching future generations to make these kind of choices.
So I do have a plan in my head of how this is going to work out:
1st off I bought the gDiaper pants (they come with liners). I bought them as a package deal so I saved money there by not purchasing one at a time. Also to save money on covers and/or gpants you can look for used ones through craigslist or diaperswappers. Even joining the yahoo gDiaper group is helpful. That is what has motivated me the most actually.
2nd I did buy the flushables so as to make the transition easier for myself since I have no experience with washing yucky diapers. I intend to use those sparingly though because they are a little costly- around 3o cents each depending on the deal you get.
3rd- I’m planning to get cloth inserts and then get a sewing machine so I can sew some myself.
I figure once I get the hang of all this then I can use a variety of different types of cloth diapers and even do a fair amount of the sewing. That is a future goal however, and I don’t know how long it will take me to get to that. One step at a time though.
